What Is Waxing?

Waxing is the process of removing hair using a wax that’s safe for the skin. The wax adheres to the hair first, not the skin, and pulls the hair out from the root when applied correctly. This inflicts damage to the root over time, which sounds bad, but it’s really what we want to have happen. Waxing regularly will continue to damage the hair follicle, causing each hair follicle to grow back more softly, slowly, or not at all.

Why WAX?

  1. Fast sessions

  2. Instant results

  3. Several days/weeks of smoothness

  4. Less hair over time

  5. Hair grows back softer, smoother

DOES IT HURT?

The first wax is usually the most uncomfortable but is generally described by clients as “not as bad as I thought it was going to be” - especially for Brazilian and Bikini waxes. By the second or third wax, it will be easier and faster. Take an Advil an hour or two before your first appointment if you’re worried about pain. There are a couple of factors that can contribute to increased sensitivity, such as menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

What is brow lamination?

Lamination is a chemical process that softens the brow hair and allows it to stretch and be manipulated. It gives the effect of fuller and fluffier brows, which is currently having a moment. Brow lamination is a great option for clients with coarse, unruly, straight, or downward brows and want to achieve a more brushed-up look. But almost everyone looks amazing with laminated brows! The results will last up to 6 weeks, and each treatment comes with a homecare kit to help maintain the look and keep the brow hairs healthy.

SPEAKING OF MENSTRUAL CYCLES?

You can absolutely get waxed while menstruating but might experience an increase in sensitivity, even with services in non-bikini areas like brows and underarms. Some guests don’t notice a difference at all. We ask that you use a tampon or menstrual cup if you are getting a Brazilian wax. Additionally, we totally understand that you might not be comfortable getting a wax during this time of the month. If you have to reschedule due to your period, just give us a call.

Where do I park?

We are located on the northwest corner of College and Meadow, near the Graduate Hotel. There are two free parking lots at the building, and you are welcome to park in either. One is located on the north side of the building and is accessed from College, and the other is on the southeast side of the building and is accessed from Meadow. Once you’re in the building, take the hallway all the way to the south end of the building (nearest to Meadow), and you’ll find the Wax Suite in Suite 13. If parking is full in the southeast lot, there is almost always room in the north lot.

 How Can I prepare?

Exfoliate Skin: Exfoliating is always a good idea for any part of the body, whether you’re waxing or not. For the best results, exfoliate 2-3 times per week and 2 days before your scheduled wax. A dry brush or a scrub will get the job done, and we can make recommendations if you need them. Always moisturize after exfoliating!

Book Early: If you haven’t been waxing regularly and your goal is to be waxed and ready for a specific date, then we recommend you come in at least 2-3 times before that special occasion. For the appointment just prior to the big date, book your appointment 2-6 days beforehand because you might not get your desired appointment date/time if you wait until the last minute. So book early whenever possible!

Grow Hair: Hair length is a crucial part of getting a great wax. For almost all body services, a good rule of thumb is that the hair needs to be at least ¼” or the length of a cupcake sprinkle. Facial services are a little different, and we can usually work with slightly shorter hair on the face. However, if the hair is too short, the wax won’t be able to adhere properly. The longer, the better. We can always trim if necessary. Leave the trimming to us. No shaving in between appointments, and definitely no shaving at least 2-3 weeks before your first appointment.

Don’t Tan: No tanning of any kind (e.g. self-tan, spray tan, tanning bed, sun tanning, etc) for at least 24 hours, but waiting a full 48 hours is ideal. Remember…wax first, tan later!

What SHould I expect after?

Redness and tenderness are normal, which can last up to 48 hours. Waxing opens up your pores and leaves them susceptible to bacteria and other issues if you’re not careful. For Brazilian and bikini waxes, don’t swim, have sex, wear tight clothes, or take hot showers/baths for at least 24 hours. For underarm waxes, don’t use deodorant for at least 24 hours. For all wax services, here is a list of other off-limits activities for the 24 hours after your wax:

  1. Don’t sweat excessively and/or work out.

  2. Don’t apply heavy makeup.

  3. Don’t touch the area without clean hands.

  4. Don’t self-tan, spray tan, suntan, or use a tanning bed.

  5. Don’t exfoliate for at least 2 to 3 days.

How Often Should I Get Waxed?

The recommended frequency of appointments can vary widely from person to person due to variances in the rate of hair growth. We will recommend a frequency that’s specifically tailored to you at your first appointment, and we’ll refine that frequency over time - since hair growth should start to slow down as a natural byproduct of regular waxing. That said, the following ranges are a reasonable guide for the waxing frequencies required by most people:

  1. Facial services every 2 to 4 weeks.

  2. Underarm services every 2 to 4 weeks.

  3. Bikini and Brazilian services every 3 to 5 weeks.

  4. Most other services every 4 to 6 weeks.

  5. Or whenever the hair is at least 1/4” long for any service.
